Text Box: Mission The Resource is a centralized facility for the efficient production of transgenic animal models for UAB investigators. Genetically engineered mice are produced by trained professionals, at high standards of quality, and with excellent efficiency in terms of Resource utilization (costs, space, personnel, etc.). For the investigator, this approach means availability of highly specialized services at a reasonable cost. The UAB Transgenic Mouse Facility is supported by the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, the UAB Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases Center, the UAB Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease Core Center, and by cost recovery fees.   History The UAB Transgenic Mouse Facility has completed approximately 1200 DNA or ES cell microinjection projects since its establishment on June 1, 1991.  This includes over 900 projects for UAB investigators and an additional 300 projects for outside investigators as part of an expired NIH funded national project.  In the last 2 yrs, we have created 12 knockout/knockin animal models using both commercially available “genetrap” clones, and gene targeted ES cell lines produced by our core facility.  The UAB Transgenic Mouse Facility is currently located in the Kaul Human Genetics Building, Room 605.
