The goal of the Division of Research is to expand knowledge and create new applications through laboratory and clinical research along the continuum from fundamental studies to preclinical investigations to bench-to-bedside translation (T1 research) to clinical practice and community implementation (T2 research).

Department of Genetics Scientific Retreat

Academic Year 2008/2009

Academic Year 2007/2008

This year, IGGP students attended the two days Department of Genetics retreat at the Alabama 4-H Center. The rich scientific program of the first day was followed by a day of fun in the sun, playing and building friendships on the low-rope course at 4-H.

The first half of the scientific program was dedicated to systems biology and bioinformatics. At left is John Hartman, M.D. and at right is Brett McKinney, PhD, both from the Department of Genetics, UAB, giving their lectures.
The keynote address was given by Robert Williams, PhD (University of Tennessee Health Science Center). In the left panel Lisa Guay-Woodford, MD, Department of Genetics, introduces Dr. Williams. The title of his talk was "Systems Genetics: Moving toward a new paradigm in integrative and translational research". In the right panel, Ludwine Messiaen, PhD (Department of Genetics, UAB) gives her lecture.
IGGP students presented their studies in posters (left panel, Jingyu Guo, 2nd year graduate student) and in short podium presentations (right panel, Tyesha Farmer, 5th year graduate student).
On the second day, after a continental breakfast in the lodge dining room facing the beautiful lake, students and faculty participated in a fun-filled team-building activity on the low ropes course
